Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about ordering, shipping, subscriptions and our coffee.
Ordering & Shipping
How much is shipping? Do you offer free shipping?
Orders of $50 or more ship free with standard shipping (listed at 3 to 5 business days), and that includes subscription orders. Orders under $50, subscriptions included, don't ship free, and shipping is calculated at checkout, so you'll see the cost before you finish your order.
Where do you ship? Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada or other countries?
Lower 48 only. Orders ship from Chapin, SC, to the contiguous United States. For now we don't ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada or any other country, but we hope to expand our shipping later.
How soon will my order ship, and how fresh is the coffee?
Within 48 business hours of when we receive your order, or within 14 business days if an item is on back order, and we'll let you know if we can't meet that.
We roast fresh in small weekly batches, so the coffee we ship was usually roasted 2 to 14 days earlier. If orders run higher than we planned, some may wait for the next roast, usually only a day or two longer.
Can I visit a shop or pick up my order locally?
We're sorry, but not at this time. All of our coffee shops have closed, and we don't offer local pickup or local delivery. You can order online any time and we'll ship your coffee right to your door.
Can I give Bart's Coffee or a subscription as a gift?
Yes, you can ship your order to a different address. We don't offer gift notes or gift cards right now. Some customers gift a subscription by setting the recipient's address as the ship-to address; it stays in your name, and only you can manage it.
What is your return policy?
Please see our Refund Policy page for how returns and refunds work. We want you to love your coffee, so if you have any questions, just email us at info@bartscoffee.com.
Subscriptions
How does the subscription work, and what's the discount?
Every size of our regular coffees can be a subscription, though sale and special edition items can't. Choose Subscribe & Save on the product page for the size you want, then pick weekly, monthly, every 2 months or every 3 months.
Your discount:
- 10% off to start
- 15% off once you've had 3 months of subscription renewals, and it stays at 15% unless you cancel
- Back to 10% if you cancel and later reactivate, or start a new subscription
Subscription orders of $50 or more ship free (under $50 don't), and subscriptions renew automatically.
Can I pause, skip, change or cancel my subscription?
Yes, any time, with no obligation. You can:
- Pause or skip
- Change how often it ships
- Make other changes, or cancel
To manage it, use the customer portal login on our website: enter your email address and we'll email you a link to see and update your subscriptions.
Our Coffee
What is air-roasted coffee, and how is it different from drum roasting?
It's coffee roasted in a stream of clean, hot air instead of in a hot metal drum. In a drum roaster, coffee tumbles against hot metal, and the thin outer skin can scorch and add smoke to the cup. Our fluid-bed (hot air) roaster roasts the coffee evenly without touching super-hot metal, and lets us fine-tune heat and airflow as it roasts.
Does air-roasted coffee taste less bitter? Is it easier on the stomach?
That's what we roast for: roasting in hot air avoids the scorching and smoke that can add bitter, burnt notes, especially in darker roasts, for a smoother cup that's still bold and rich. Many customers tell us it's easier on their stomach, though everyone is different, so if you have a sensitive stomach, we'd suggest checking with your doctor.
For a mild cup, try Brazilian Bossa Nova, a mild, smooth medium roast with hints of chocolate, hazelnut and brown spice.
What roast levels do you offer, and which coffee should I try first?
Light, medium and dark, and none of our dark roasts are over-roasted:
- Light: African Sunrise
- Medium: O.M.G. Original, O.M.G. Decaf, Brazilian Bossa Nova and Mayan Tikal
- Blend: O.M.G. Fire & Ice, 85% medium roast and 15% dark
- Dark (mild): Ethiopian Kaffa, taken to 465°F, and O.M.G. Dark, rich and bold
New to Bart's? Start with O.M.G. Original, our signature blend, which people say is like hearth and home in a cup.
Is O.M.G. Original flavor enhanced? Does it have any additives?
Yes, O.M.G. Original is flavor enhanced, just as its label says, and so is every coffee with O.M.G. in its name. We use 100% natural, organic flavor-enhancing extracts, and they contain no proteins and no common allergens, per our process. It's our signature coffee, a smooth, mild Brazilian coffee.
Do you sell decaf? How is it decaffeinated, and does it have any caffeine?
Yes, O.M.G. Decaf is a medium roast Brazilian decaf with a rich body that's sweet and clean, flavor enhanced with our natural, organic O.M.G. extracts.
- Method: Swiss Water Process decaf whenever it's available, and traditional-process decaf during shortages, so it can vary from batch to batch
- Caffeine: like all decaf, it isn't completely caffeine-free, but by the US industry standard, decaf is generally at least 97% caffeine-free
- Sizes: whole bean or ground (drip) in 12 oz, 2 lb, 5 lb or a 15 lb bucket, or K-Cups (15 or 30 count)
Do you offer K-Cups? Which coffees come in K-Cups, and do they work in any Keurig?
Yes, right now in O.M.G. Original, O.M.G. Dark, O.M.G. Decaf and O.M.G. Fire & Ice, in 15 or 30 count; they fit standard K-Cup (Keurig) brewers, and the pods are recyclable. Our K-Cups use a new, patented pod design with a pleated filter, which lets us put more coffee in each cup and greatly improves extraction, for a rich, flavorful cup of coffee. Give ours a try, and we think you'll agree that they give you the best cup of coffee from a K-Cup you've ever had!
Should I buy whole bean or ground coffee? What grind do you offer?
Every coffee comes whole bean or ground for drip coffee makers, and we don't offer other grinds at this time.
- Drip or pour-over: our drip grind is ready to brew, and pour-over usually calls for a medium grind, much like drip
- French press or espresso: order whole bean and grind it at home, coarse for French press or fine for espresso
- Have a grinder? Whole bean lets you grind right before you brew for the freshest flavor
Tip: We recommend a burr grinder, because it produces a uniform grind size. Burr grinders come in a wide range of prices, with home grinders starting around $100 on Amazon. When it comes to grinders, you get what you pay for.
How much coffee should I use per cup?
Start with 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water, which the National Coffee Association calls the Golden Ratio. Use a little more for a bolder cup or a little less for a lighter one.
How should I store coffee? Should I freeze it?
Keep it in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place, away from heat, light and moisture, and grind just before you brew. Freezing is fine if it's done right:
- Seal the coffee in an airtight container (a zip-top bag works)
- Freeze it for up to a few months
- Let it come all the way to room temperature before opening, so condensation doesn't form and hurt the flavor
- Don't refreeze it
Our 2 lb and 5 lb sizes cost less per pound than our 12 oz size, so good storage helps you enjoy the savings.
Wholesale
Do you offer wholesale or bulk coffee for offices, cafés, churches or restaurants? Is there a minimum order?
Yes, with no minimum order amount. We offer two different account types:
- Commercial accounts for customers that use more coffee than a typical retail customer, like company offices and churches
- Wholesale accounts for places that sell our coffee to serve to their customers or resell it in person, like cafés and restaurants
Each account type gets its own discount level, and your discount is applied automatically when you log in to your account. For wholesale accounts only: orders are for small quantities by the case, whole bean or ground (drip) in 12 oz bags (cases of 8), 2 lb (cases of 4) and 5 lb (cases of 2), plus 15 lb buckets. To sign up for a wholesale account, fill out the request form on our website; a Tax ID is required.
